was involved. This comes from The American Conservative=20
magazine, a journal of well-connected US right-wingers who are deeply=20
critical of the neocons … Pat Buchanan etc. I can find no other report=
s=20
of this allegation.

Deep Background

In Washington it is hardly a secret that the same people in and around=20
the administration who brought you Iraq are preparing to do the same=20
for Iran. The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President=20
Dick Cheney=92s office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command=20
(STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in=20
response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The=20
plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both=20
conventional and tactical nuclear weapons. Within Iran there are more=20
than 450 major strategic targets, including numerous suspected=20
nuclear-weapons-program development sites. Many of the targets are=20
hardened or are deep underground and could not be taken out by=20
conventional weapons, hence the nuclear option. As in the case of=20
Iraq, the response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in=20
the act of terrorism directed against the United States. Several senior=20
Air Force officers involved in the planning are reportedly appalled at=20
the implications of what they are doing=97that Iran is being set up for a=
n=20
unprovoked nuclear attack=97but no one is prepared to damage his=20
career by posing any objections.
