US secretly helping Pakistan safeguard its nukes

“The Bush administration has spent almost $100 million in the past six years on a classified program to help Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf secure his country’s nuclear weapons, The New York Times reported in Sunday editions”. Reuters reports that the US considered but decided  not to share top-secret “permissive action link” technology with Pakistan, which prevents detonation of nukes without foolproof authentication from the White House. If it did share such technology, the US would be in serious breach of the Non Proliferation Treaty which forbids all international cooperation on nuclear weapons designs.

The spending was apparently on security and night vision equipment, helicopters and a nuclear security training centre, but much of the money has apparently vanished without much to show for it.
